Discover Osteopathy

  • What is Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a pain free, non-invasive attempt to understand and treat the reasons behind the body's diseased state. The reason I use the term "attempt" will become evident in the following paragraphs. It is a health discipline founded in 1874 by an American Physician Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO. An osteopathic treatment involves careful diagnosis of Musculoskeletal, Visceral, and cranial structures, to corelate and perform differential diagnosis to arrive at the root cause of the diseased state of the body. After diagnosis, treatment administered by an osteopath is governed by 4 main principles: 1. Structure (Anatomical and Physiological) and functioning of the body are reciprocal. 2. All the different organ systems are interdependent; hence each system impacts the other. 3. The body has the ability to help itself heal/cure from the diseased state, just like the WBCs remove pathogens and chondroblast, osteoblasts and osteoclast repair a fracture. This is why I assert that osteopaths aim to treat rather than directly heal the patient. Osteopaths can help remove obstacles (such as impeded fluid movement or micro misalignment of bones, tendons, ligaments, or viscera) faced by the regulatory systems to achieve homeostasis. 4. Rational therapy is based on the above three principles in conjunction with each other.
  • How is Osteopathy different?
Osteopathy differentiates itself from other therapies by its way of administration of treatment. Not only focusing on relieving the symptoms but also taking into consideration the functioning of each system in the body that might have collectively resulted in the present diseased state To put it simply, an osteopath does not look at a problem through a pin hole camera, rather he takes a wide-angle view. Osteopaths use only their hands for treatment. A special technique called “Listening” involves the hands of the osteopath to feel fascial tension over skin guiding towards a probable problem point. This technique also doubles as a treatment method specially in people who suffer from extreme pain due to movement as “listening does not involve any motion. Also, who does not love a great massage. Osteopaths employ a variety of massage techniques which helps patients both at a physical and psychological level. Recognizing the uniqueness of each body type, osteopaths tailor specific treatment plans for individual patients, even when facing similar problems.
  • What can osteopathy help you with and are there any side effects?
Osteopaths specifically ensure that their treatment process or application of techniques are mostly pain free, which facilitates a very soothing treatment session. Osteopaths deal with a variety of challenges, just to name a few: Cephalalgia, gastrointestinal concerns, arthralgia, postural dysfunctions, acute/chronic/recurring dysfunctions. Due to the non-invasive nature of osteopathy, side effects are minimal to none. Although, mild headache / soreness in the area of treatment or weakness which have been reported by very few patients after treatment, have resolved within 24 to 48 hours.
  • When should you see an osteopath?
Like honey, osteopathy is beneficial both in times of health and sickness. For honey, we love the taste, and it has antimicrobial properties, helping in body’s resistance against pathogens, and it helps soothe a sore throat as well. Osteopathy plays a significant role in preventive medicine. Lymphatic drainage and a comprehensive joint mobilization administered by an osteopath on healthy individuals will help them maintain a restriction free life style. In disease case, osteopathically finding and fixing the root cause for the issue comes adjunctive to pharmacologic treatment. Also, a pain free, soothing massage when we are sick would feel brilliant. You can visit an osteopath both in health and in disease.
  • What should you bring to your scheduled consultation?
Kindly ensure you bring your prior medical documentation, encompassing X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and ultrasound reports to your upcoming appointment. While there is no formal dress code, we recommend wearing comfortable and flexible attire, such as pajamas and a loose shirt, as osteopathic treatments are most effective when performed on individuals in adaptable clothing. You have the option to either bring your flexible clothes with you or arrive wearing them. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
